Strength training for former athletes

· 6 min read

You kept the work ethic and the movement quality. You probably lost the top-end output and the ankle range.

What carries over

Motor control, competitiveness and a tolerance for hard days are all still there. That is why returning athletes progress faster than true beginners — and also why they overshoot the first month.

What quietly left

Rate of force development, single-leg stability and end-range mobility fade first because nothing in adult life demands them. Put one jump, one single-leg movement and five minutes of mobility in every session and most of it returns inside a block.

Build in blocks, not weeks

Four-week blocks with a lighter final week give you something to progress against and a built-in place to recover. That structure is what your old programme had, and it is usually the thing missing now.
